In The Beginning

Real estate agents in the strict sense did not exist. Yet, they have been amongst us for a long time. Back then, they were not known as real estate agents. Not at all. Some referred to them as matchmakers, which is quite true. During the historical period of the glorious Melaka Sultanate, real estate agents existed then in the form of " Pak Cik's", "Mak Cik's ", "Ah So's" , the grocer or even the newspaper vendor (if there was one). These people will trade current news when they meet each other when they are purchasing groceries or when they meet each other for evening walks. These people are the ones to be approaches should you or me are interested in purchasing properties. They have "feelers". They know of who is planning to sell his or her property, why they are keen on selling it or even at times, how much they intend to sell it. The little ones actually are the fastest news carrier. They will spread the news across the village with the speed of a wildfire via their friends. Their friends will then tell it to their friends and the list goes on. Soon, the news has spread like the wildfire and the whole village will know of it. At times, if the seller or purchaser is a well-known figure, even the neighboring villages will come to know of it. That certainly hasn't changed till today. Back then also, there was no such thing as getting a "commission" Oh no! Their reward would come in the shape of being presented with tokens of appreciations, increased popularity in the community as the one to approach should one require information on properties or sometimes, only a word of "Thanks". Soon, the entrepreneurial ones began to realise that they can actually make a living out of being a source of information especially on properties a.k.a being a broker. They began to charge a nominal fee for their "professional services". Their office would be the 'warung' or coffee shop.
